We put native M365 Backup through extensive testing across Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams to see where it excels and where critical enterprise coverage gaps remain.
The Positives: Speed and Native Integration
Native M365 Backup delivers blistering restore speeds. Because data resides within Microsoft's internal fabric, restoring a 500 GB SharePoint site collection takes minutes rather than the hours typically required to stream data back over public APIs. The administrative setup is instant, requiring zero external server configuration or API permissions management.
The Real Gaps: What Doesn't Get Backed Up
Despite its performance, testing revealed major structural blind spots:
- Teams Structure & Private Chats: While channel files in SharePoint are backed up, 1-on-1 private chats, channel posts, tab configurations, and team metadata are not preserved natively.
- SharePoint Metadata & Custom Lists: Custom SharePoint list definitions, term store taxonomies, and site permissions often fail to restore accurately to alternate tenants.
- Zero Air-Gap Protection: Because backups live inside the primary tenant ecosystem, a compromise of Global Admin credentials allows an attacker to disable and delete the backups alongside primary data.
The Verdict
Native M365 Backup is excellent for rapid disaster recovery from mass file deletion or ransomware within active tenants. However, for true ransomware protection, compliance archiving, and full Teams environment restoration, an independent, air-gapped backup platform remains indispensable.
